Tips for Making a Connection
Discover how to have meaningful conversations with our members. Learn to connect, respect boundaries, and avoid sensitive topics.
Each meaningful connection made between a Pal and a member begins with two people meeting for the first time! Here are some tips on how to hit it off with someone new:
Introduce Yourself
Start the conversation by greeting the member and introducing yourself. Follow it up by asking, "How are you?" This shows genuine curiosity and invites the other person to start talking and sharing.
Maintain Positive Body Language
Smile and keep eye contact. This may make you more approachable and the member more comfortable.
Give Compliments
Compliments are great conversation starters. A sincere compliment can instantly make someone feel more willing to open up.
Listen and Ask Questions
Pay attention to what the member is sharing with you and ask questions to uncover more information about things like their needs, interests, and experiences. This can often lead to finding common ground, which helps in making connections.
Below are some questions you can use as conversation starters:
- "Do you have any hobbies or interests you're passionate about?"
- "Have you traveled to any interesting places?"
- "What's your favorite type of food?"
- "How do you like to spend your weekends?"
- "What's something that never fails to make you smile?"
Be Yourself
It's a two-way conversation, so be open to sharing things about yourself too! Remember that not every interaction will lead to a deep connection, and that's okay. As long as you remain genuine and mindful during the conversation, you're doing great.
Respect Boundaries
If the person isn't in the mood for a conversation, be understanding and give them space.
Avoid Sensitive Subjects
While our Pals and members talk about all sorts of things, we’ve found it helpful to be careful around certain topics, such as:
- Money
- Politics and Religion
- Appearance
